A classic capris salad with soft, creamy fresh mozzarella, juicy seasonal tomatoes, and basil leaves. This is a salad that is close to my heart and sweet. Here's a recipe we've brought to you.
You may hardly need a prescription, but keep reading my tips for making the best Capris salad with a few more fun variations.
How to make Caprese salad
A great Caprese salad starts with great ingredients. This recipe is for summer when tomatoes are the juiciest, sweet and tasty. I like to stop at the farmer's market and collect as many colorful tomatoes as possible.
Not only are they beautiful, but all kinds of flavors are a little different, and it's fun to display them in this simple salad. Find green, yellow, and red, and try different shapes - cherry tomatoes are the fair play here too!
In addition to peak season tomatoes, you need these 5 easy ingredients:
- Fresh mozzarella cheese. Find soft, spongy mozzarella balls filled with water. Use a good sharp knife to gently cut them into thick pieces. You don't want squashed mozzarella!
- Basil. Only fresh leaves here! Put them whole on tomatoes and mozzarella, or gently tear off the large leaves before adding to salads.
- Extra virgin olive oil. You can find good quality, 100% extra virgin olive oil to use in this recipe because you can really taste it here. Extra virgin olive oil has a strong, fruity flavor that is a perfect finishing touch to juicy pieces of tomato, mozzarella, and basil - I do not recommend using any other oil instead.
- Freshly ground black pepper. If you don't already have a pepper mill, now is the time to pick it up. Grind it straight on top of the salad for the best taste!
- Sea salt. I like to sprinkle a pinch of flaky sea salt on salads, like Malden sea salt. Regular sea salt will also work, but leave out the iodized stuff here. It has a slightly bitter taste that can stick to such a simple dish.
Variations in the composition of Caprese salad
In the recipe below, you will see that I suggest some variations. Although it is difficult to beat the traditional Caprese salad made with good hereditary tomatoes
- Use some peaches and some tomatoes, as I do in this Burrata recipe. Or, skip the fresh mozzarella in this recipe and serve tomatoes and basil with a ball of burrata instead!
- Add avocado, or if you are vegan, use avocado instead of cheese.
- Try a combination of fresh basil and mint.
- So top the salad with toasted pine nuts for crunch.
