Traditional Mexican beef tacos are made on soft corn tortillas with marinated sliced or chopped beef. They are great! But, when we think of classic tacos, most Americans don't think so.
Best Ground Beef Taco Recipe
Most of us grew up eating ground beef tacos in crispy corn shells or soft flour tortillas with lots of toppings. This is the traditional taco that we are making in this recipe. But, we are not using pre-packaged Taco Seasoning Mix. This recipe uses a delicious homemade taco spice.
What kind of ground beef for tacos?
Lean beef is the best beef to use for making tacos because you don't have to remove the fat after cooking it. Beef contains enough fat to make it very tasty, but not too much fat. Stepping up to get rid of fat makes this a quick and easy taco recipe.
Of course, if you have high-fat beef, you can still use it in this recipe. Just cook the beef and remove the fat before adding the taco spice.
How to make tacos

- In a frying pan over medium-high heat, break the lean beef.
- So add chili powder, cumin, salt, oregano, garlic powder, and pepper.
- Cook the beef until brown.
- So add tomato sauce and water to the meat.
- Cook until some liquid evaporates, but the meat is still sauce.
- Put 2 tablespoons of taco meat in hard taco shells or small soft tortillas.
- Top tacos with your favorite traditional taco toppings.

- Sliced cheese
- Chopped lettuce
- Chopped tomatoes
- Chopped onion
- Chopped avocado
- Sour cream
- Guacamole
So can how much taco meat do you need per person?
Ingredients:
- 1 lb. 90% to 93% lean beef
- 1 tablespoon chili powder
- 1 teaspoon crushed cumin
- 3/4 teaspoon salt
- 1/2 teaspoon dried oregano
- 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
- 1/4 teaspoon ground black pepper
- 1/2 cup tomato sauce
- 1/4 cup of water
- So 12 Taco shells - either hard shells or small 6-inch soft flour tortillas will work.
- Optional taco toppings: sliced cheese lettuce, sliced tomatoes, sliced red onion, taco sauce, sour cream, guacamole, etc.
Instructions
- Put the beef in a large pan over medium-high heat. Separate the meat with a wooden spoon. Add chili powder, cumin, salt, oregano, garlic powder, and pepper to the meat. Stir well. Cook for about 6-8 minutes, stirring occasionally until meat is cooked through.
- Reduce heat to medium. Add tomato sauce and water. Shake to combine. Cook, stirring occasionally, for 7-8 minutes, until some liquid evaporates but the meat mixture is still a little sauce. Remove from heat.
- Heat the taco shells according to their package instructions.
- Fill taco shells with 2 tablespoons of taco meat. Top with desired taco toppings: sliced cheese, sliced lettuce, sliced tomatoes, sliced red onion, taco sauce, sour cream, guacamole, etc.
